Tyler Van Dyke has often been mentioned as one of the best players and quarterbacks nationally entering the 2022 season. Van Dyke had a breakout season after Miami lost starter D’Eriq King for the season. in a week three loss to Michigan State. In the second half of the season, Van Dyke set up Heisman-like numbers.
After losing by winning just one of the first three starts under Tyler Van Dyke, Miami finished the season with five wins in its last six games. Van Dyke threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in each of the final six games of the 2021 season. Only Joe Burrow had a streak like that in college football’s playoff era.
247 Sports’ Chris Hummer named Van Dyke one of“11 players are poised to become the next wave of BFC superstars.” Van Dyke is the foundation of the Miami 2022 football team. Miami is returning seven starters on offense in 2022. The Hurricanes have lost their top two wide receivers, Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo.
Van Dyke will enter 2022 with a new offensive coordinator and QB coach. Rhett Lashlee left Miami to become SMU’s head coach. Miami’s new head coach, Mario Cristobal, is conducting a methodical search to complete his coaching staff. The new offensive coordinator will be key to Van Dyke’s development.
TYLER VAN DYKE, QB, MIAMI
D’Eriq King’s season-ending shoulder injury at the start of the 2021 season looked debilitating for the Hurricanes. Instead, it led to the emergence of Van Dyke, who was one of the best quarterbacks in the country in the second half.
Van Dyke finished the season with 2,931 passing yards with 25 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He’s averaging nine yards per attempt (10th nationally) and rushed (sic) 62.3% of his passes.
There are still a few questions about Van Dyke — like who will call the games in Miami — but I’m still planning on jumping into 3rd grade. If that happens, he’ll be in the mix with Sam Hartman to be the top QB in the ACC. Miami had the option to go hard after someone like Caleb Williams this offseason.
Rather, it looks like it will stay with Van Dyke. That says a lot about how Mario Cristobal and his new staff feel about Miami’s outgoing QB.
Van Dyke finished 2021 four TD assists behind Miami’s season record of 29 set by Steve Walsh in 1988. With the streak of at least three TD assists in six straight games to end the regular season, Van Dyke missed a real chance to tie the record set by Walsh before Miami withdrew from the Sun Bowl.
Van Dyke had 20 touchdown passes in the final six games of the 2021 regular season. With that pace in 2022, Van Dyke would smash the record set by Walsh. Van Dyke threw for 2,194 yards in the last six games of 2021. Miami’s single-season passing record is 3,642 yards in 1984 by Bernie Kosar.
Kosar averaged 303.5 passing yards per game in 1984. Van Dyke averaged 325.67 in his nine starts in 2021. With the pace he played in 2021, Van Dyke should break the Miami’s single-season passing records in 2022. Led by Van Dyke, expectations should be high for Miami’s offense in 2022.
