Killzone 2’s online multiplayer servers have been unofficially resurrected

Well, here’s something that might get you dusting off the old PS3. A group of dedicated fans have apparently restored the online functionality of the 2009 Guerilla Games title, Killzone 2 Online Multiplayer! Known as PSONE (Emulated Online PlayStation), this is a group of fans whose sole purpose is to restore the online functionality of some of the very popular PlayStation titles that have now been discontinued. Their past projects have included Warhawk and Twisted Metal Black, with plans to restore other online titles such as Socom Confrontation, Wipeout HD, and even PlayStation Home.

PS Online Network Emulated is an ongoing attempt to re-enable the online mode of several PlayStation games. Available since 2002, the PS is a fairly old game console. Despite its age, there are still people who want to play online. Some love to remember the good old days, others want to enjoy games that simply have no equivalent on more modern consoles. Sony has decided to no longer host game servers, which has made some games unusable or at least difficult to use.

However, while these are all still in the works, the team revealed that their latest restoration has finally arrived, and it’s none other than Killzone 2! Yes, the same Killzone 2 whose servers were shut down almost four years ago. Here’s what the team had to say about their Discord Channel:

The release will be public for the PS3. RPCS3 users will need to be whitelisted by PSONE staff at this time. Will we do our best to bring a stable server, please once again keep in mind that we are all going to test something new here.

The server is an emulation of the origin server, it does not come with all the functionality of the origin servers. It’s a work in progress, these features take more time and I’m sure people can’t wait any longer.

And while the basic online experience is working, the team still has a lot of work to do as they revealed a number of features that are still not working.

Features not available at launch:

  • Community features (clan, mailbox, tournaments)
  • Statistics (ribbons, medals, rank, value rank)
  • Trophies – Dedicated official game rooms
  • Secondary Badges Since stats are not available, all players will have the highest rank and purple ribbon.

What about the requirements for multiplayer to be up and running again?

Terms & Conditions

  • Internet access (should allow custom DNS servers)
  • A PlayStation Network account
  • A PlayStation 3 (no jailbreak is necessary as it is intended for legitimate consoles)
  • A copy of Killzone 2

That’s it! Well, and redirect your PS3’s DNS to the correct one. To get started, just follow their “Getting Started Guide.

I have to say this is one of the coolest projects out there. While most PS3 owners have probably switched to the PS4 or PS5 already, it’s good to know that I can still take advantage of some of these great PlayStation multiplayer deals anytime, despite server downtime.

Guerrilla Games shut down the servers for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 in March 2018, releasing the following statement:

On March 29, 2018, after more than six years of operation and countless battles between the ISA and Helghast, the online servers for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 will be decommissioned. The single-player campaign for both games will remain accessible, but online play and related features will no longer work.

As we approach the end of the Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 online lifecycle, we would like to express how grateful we are for all the support and feedback we have received from the community over the past eight years. Your enthusiasm is what drove us to perfect our craft and grow as a studio. We hope you enjoyed playing Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 online as much as we enjoyed creating them.

To date, the only official online multiplayer (for consoles, Mercenaries still working on Vita) in the Killzone franchise is Killzone: Shadowfall, which launched with the PS4 in 2013. No word on how long these servers will last. . , although Guerilla Games recently removed the official Killzone website, preventing Shadowfall players from creating new clans.
