Danny Dines: Eggroll-arito at Kamikaze Kitchen in ABQ

One of my biggest icebreakers is asking people I interview, “What’s the best food for getting around?”

More than a few mentioned an “Egg Roll-Burrito thing” in Albuquerque that I had to try.

So, I did.

Kamikaze Kitchen is an Asian-Southwestern fusion restaurant in Albuquerque. This is the home of the Eggroll-arito.

“It’s called Eggroll-arito, and it’s a fusion between an egg roll and a burrito,” owner Nic Riccardi said. “I wanted an egg roll, but something that eats like a meal, so that’s what my wife and I came up with – something a little different.”

However, the popularity of this dish does not only come from word of mouth. In fact, the dish went viral on TikTok (Watch the video here)

“It was crazy!” said Ricardo. “For about a month after this video went viral, we had queues at the door.”

The Eggroll-arito has green chili fried rice, fortune cookie fried chicken, your choice of hot sauce, a drizzle of wasabi mayonnaise, sesame seeds and green onions.

“It’s literally just my version of something I grew up with versus something I’ve now moved to,” Riccardi said.

Riccardi is from St. Louis, Missouri, and started rolling spring rolls when he was six years old.

“My stepfather, for weekend cash, worked at a Chinese restaurant, and one of the big ingredients he always brought home was egg rolls,” Riccardi said. “Everything we had at home, roll it in an egg roll and call it dinner.”

However, their biggest seller is not the Eggroll-arito, but another dish, the Mother Klucker.

“It’s by far our biggest seller. It’s going to be an orange chicken sandwich, a little spicy, a little sweet homemade coleslaw, and it’s my best seller.

You heard it, people of Rio Rancho. It’s time to discover Kamikaze Kitchen, eat local and try legendary dishes. Click on here for their website.
